The park is a winter refuge for ducks, geese, hawks, bald eagles, blue heron and migratory birds.
Two iconic empty towers hint at the history. Now there is hiking on Howard trail and year-round camping, boating, fishing, swimming, wildlife viewing.
We hiked the 7 mile Howard trail in January of 2014 . There is a drought right now so it looks very dry. The trail is marked but some of them are laying on the ground facing the direction you need to. You cross onto a ranch and walk by cattle. Rancho seco Recreational Area this time of year is very quiet.
